The Jewellers News: July Edition
Well, here we are. At the end of the summer term. And it has been absolutely brilliant. And we are finishing on a high with a spectacular end to our six week courses - thank you to every student who has joined us this term. Some amazing pieces were made and you can see some the highlights on the NJS instagram. We will be closed for classes through August, with the exception of our Summer Schools and we're already excited to be back in September to do it all over again. There is nowhere nicer to be than the NJS workshop. It's so many peoples happy place and somewhere we all can get some time away from every day life and fulfil our creative selves. Our tutors love it just as much as you do.

‘Curated by British Asian artisan Anisha Parmar, whose eponymous jewellery line draws inspiration from her heritage, 'My Adornment is My Power’ explores themes of power and female adornment. This includes a display of South Asian jewellery from the Kedleston collection, with pieces selected by Anisha Parmar and shown alongside some of her own work. It's on until October.

Fiona DeMarco's exquisite signature combination of (intricate yet dynamic) hand-forged clusters of petal shaped discs, drops and granules set on wires move in motion sympathetically with the wearer as if alive. If you'd like to make your own chains and findings and perhaps be inspired by Fiona you could join our Level Two: Chains and Findings course in September.

Our July project is a twisted silver ring with a continuous pattern and seamless join. Deceptively simple, this was the more insanely satisfying thing to make. You can download the project from the website ready to make at home or in your own workshop. And it's available free to our silver, gold and platinum members. As with all our download projects it's designed to be made using nothing more than the tools included in our 'I Want It All' tool kit.

Use basic ring making techniques to create a wide base ring with two or three articulated free spinning bands in sterling silver. Deceptively simple to make, this is a fabulous and fun project and an impressive achievement for one days work. Suitable for new and experienced jewellers. Saturday 29th July £125 ONE PLACE LEFT

We've been thinking about the consumables - gas, flux, pickle etc that we use in our workshop. How can we aim to make good sustainable choices and reduce the environmental impact of our jewellery making?
We've been exploring what it takes to turn your passion for jewellery making into a profession. We have seen lots of students set up amazing businesses and we've been there from their very first silver smithing lesson to their first craft fair and beyond. We know it can be a bit scary but if you need to make your making make some money we can help. Read more on the blog.

We are there for our students whenever you need us at every step of the way and we are so proud to be able to share your achievements. Our students work hard to gain the skills to create their own jewellery brands and each one is unique. We offer our professional students the chance to become an NJS approved maker - it's our official stamp of approval and it only goes to those students who have earned it in their commitment, innovation and quality of work.
