Explore Fold Forming - 27th February

This small-scale metalworking taster workshop focuses on the contemporary metalsmithing technique called Foldforming. Essentially, foldforming involves taking flat sheet metal and folding it. Through hammering or passing it through a rolling mill, the metal will be stretched and curved. When opened up using your hands, interesting and unique three-dimensional forms are created.Worried about being a complete beginner? Don't worry, this is perfect class to learn all the basics and try something new.
 
NOTE: This is a hammering class and will be noisy. We will have ear plugs and ear defenders available but you are welcome to bring your own.

CLASS DESCRIPTION
Who is this class suitable for?
Beginners to intermediate makers. This is a hands on and active class where it is
easiest to work while standing. It involves lots of hammering the metal and will
be very noisy. You will work at your own pace and energy levels.
What will I make?
Using copper sheet, you will create a selection of samples using the
metalworking technique of Foldforming. Working through the foldforming
reference book by the techniques’ inventor, Charles Lewton-Brain, we will try
out many different types of folding techniques to create unusual and organic
three-dimensional copper forms.
What will I learn?
The contemporary metalworking technique of foldforming involves taking flat
sheet of metal and folding it, then through hammering or passing through a
rolling mill, the metal is stretched and curved. When opening up these 2D forms,
using your hands, unique 3D sculptures emerge.
Other skills learnt include learning good hammer techniques and posture, good
workshop H&S, tips and ideas to help you continue using this technique in your
future designs and creations. Also as the metal is repeatedly requiring softening
to easily work it, annealing and quenching techniques and the final finishing of
samples includes filing and burnishing.

All tools and equipment are provided.  Your class fee includes enough copper to create your samples and explore the tech to suit your preference.
