How to become a good jeweller?

Jewellery is more than just beautiful objects - it's tiny pieces of art, each with a story. But what separates a good jeweller or silversmith from the rest? What qualities do you need to be successful in the workshop, make pieces you are proud of and that are wonderful to wear?

PASSION

A great jeweller or silversmith takes pride in their work. From delicate soldering to setting a tiny gemstone just right, attention to detail is everything. It’s about skill, but also love for the process—shaping raw materials into something timeless. A passion for the process, the history and the craft will keep you working to a high standard and ensure every piece you make is just as you want it to be.

PATIENCE AND PRECISION

This is not a craft that can be rushed. It takes time, steady hands, and a keen eye. Good makers know when to slow down to get it just right. If you can relax into the process and let the tools do the work, giving it the time it needs you'll find a joy in the work and that will shine through in what you make. It can take time to hone your skills and gain the knowledge, strength and expertise to create your own designs. Be patient with the process and also with yourself and it will happen.

DESIGN STYLE

Beyond technique, creativity is key. A good jeweller knows how to balance form and function, blending tradition with their own unique style. Whether they design minimalist pieces or bold statement items, their work feels both fresh and thoughtful. We can show you how to make things but not what to make - you need to inspire and encourage your own sense of style and design and bring a piece of you into each piece you create.

A PERSONAL TOUCH

The human element is what makes handmade jewellery so special. Good makers listen, communicate well, and express themselves through their work. Every piece should feel like it has a little soul in it.

As a maker you aren't a passive part of the process, you are the process. And sometimes the little details you might see as imperfections are the elements that make a piece unique and beautiful. The marks of the tools in your hands give each piece a richness and authenticity.

Even if you aren't yet a skilled or experienced jeweller and even if you are still working on your precision, patience or design style, if you start with a passion and end with a personal touch you will become a great jewellery maker.
