inspired by... Emily Kidson is known for her use of wood and laminate with precious metals. Sensitive use of colour is central to her work and is the backdrop to a minimal, modern aesthetic with areas of intricate detail. We love her strong colours and use of non-traditional materials.
making... Our June project is an articulated pollinator pendant with moveable riveted wings. Download the template and instructions and choose from four different insects each in three different sizes. Learn to use a rivet to join the sections and a card spacer to make sure those wings can fly. You can download the project from the website ready to make at home or in your own workshop. And it's available free to our silver, gold and platinum members. As with all our download projects it's designed to be made using nothing more than the tools included in our 'I Want It All' tool kit.
learning...
Our June classes are all full but if you wait an extra week you can explore sand casting from found objects in this introductory workshop. Find out what objects will create a good mould and how to prepare them for the casting process. Learn how to prepare and create a mould and melt down silver to create the cast. Create a few different casts and to finish a piece to wear if you choose to. Sunday 3rd July: 10.30 - 4.00 £160 (FOUR PLACES LEFT)
eating...
This weather calls for something summery and this week we have been nibbling on a delicious lemon and elderflower sponge. We don't bother with the icing though - it makes our workbench sticky.
exploring... On the blog we are getting to know the NJS team starting with founder and floor sweeper Alys Power. If you have emailed us, come to a class, or just liked a post, you have probably met Alys along the way and now you can get to know her a little bit better.
We've also had a few students getting in a pickle about their pickle so we've added a guide to pickling on the blog to help you see how we do it.
launching...
