Seeing our students continue to learn, create and even sell their work independently makes us so very happy. This week we want to share the beautiful work made by Peter Skillen in his Loughborough workshop - Silver & Stone by Peter.
Peter is a self taught jeweller and came to us for our six week level one course in 2020.
"I took a course with NJS and it changed everything. It gave me the confidence in myself to continue this incredible journey."
Learning from, books, online videos and other jewellers gave Peter skills and knowledge but he needed some reassurance and support to create a style that is self-assured and uniquely his. His work is bold and solid, exploring textures and surface finishes combined with substantial semi precious gemstones. He makes his own collections and bespoke pieces for a range of clients, all in his own style. We love how he is fearless in the materials and process he explores. Constantly learning and improving the progress Peter has made in his work in the last 18 months is inspiring.
His favourite tool is his soldering kit - it's challenging but when it works it's a really exciting and satisfying part of the process. Next on the tool shopping list is a kiln so he can try his hand at kiln fired enamelling and he is hoping to join us for a course in enamelling later in the year. And we can't wait to have him back in the workshop to see what he makes next.
